“Levada Story” is a safety campaign created by Team Firecrest for the Civil Protection of Madeira, over a semester in my Masters of Entertainment Technology. The team was composed by me, Luís Ferreira, Paulo Bala, Rui Rela and Sandra Olim.
In Madeira island, every year, thousands of tourists hike along levadas, old irrigation channels that have been converted to footpaths. Over the years, levadas have become one of the most recognisable attractions of the island. However, due to a multitude of factors, accidents in levadas tarnish the reputation of Madeira and put in danger the island’s tourism industry. With the goal of reducing the number of accidents in levadas, the Civil Protection of Madeira approached us to research and design an experience that raises the awareness of tourists and locals to the dangers and precautions related to levadas.
In order to fully leverage the team’s skills and to create a product with the potential to be easily distributed, we developed a safety campaign composed of 3 parts: a 3 minute video, an interactive Point & Click game and a pamphlet. The video combines real footage (filmed on-site at the levadas of Madeira) and 3D animation to demonstrate the proper equipment to bring when hiking, as well as various safety tips. To achieve this, we used motion tracking techniques, combined with proper realistic lighting. The game allows the user to explore several scenarios and use their knowledge of dangers and precautions to advance in the story. Finally, the pamphlet contains all the important information that anyone needs when walking a levada.
